My most memorable moment from the occupation
The most memorable day was when the cruel Germans wanted to take daddy away from me. It was in September 1944. The day of a general round-up in Poland. In the early morning, there was some commotion in the village. It was the Germans who surrounded the whole village; they were storming into houses and taking all the men, including young boys.
They didn’t skip our house. I was still asleep when two Krauts came. My cousins and I started crying; we deeply resented the cruelty of the Germans. I begged God not to let them take my dad away. And the good God took pity on me and averted the misfortune. Nevertheless, I will never forget the sight of men being dragged out of their homes and of women and children crying for their loved ones. Such moments are never forgotten; they leave indelible memories.
