The destruction of Platerów

In the summer of 1944, when the Germans were retreating, they destroyed the station, waterworks, pumps, power station, two houseboats and the granary. The whole railway network was burned or mined and blown up. It all happened at around 2 p.m. Smoke billowed as if from a thousand factory chimneys. The terrible boom, the dust and the noise of collapsing iron. The crops burned for two days. Only scorched earth and scrap iron were left. The Germans did great harm to us.
