Ammunition store in the forest
One Sunday in July 1944, the Germans fled from Łuków. It was in the forest that the Germans had an ammunition store. They had brought it over the course of a month in carts and trucks. They brought a lot, even bombs. The whole forest was surrounded by barbed wire. A German guard was patrolling the barbed wire every dozen metres or so.
Later, when they found out about [the order] to retreat, they started removing the ammunition. They were removing it for a week, but they soon ran out of time and they didn’t manage to take all the ammunition, so when they left at 8 p.m. they put down mines in the forest and fled. The forest burned all night. Most of the forest was burned down. The next day, Łuków was free of the Germans.
