ANDRZEJ GARBARCZYK

A short biography of Mieczysław Garbarczyk

Born on 23 September 1924 in Śrem, poznańskie voivodeship, son of Andrzej and Józefa

née Potocka, unmarried, Roman Catholic, turner by trade.

He was raised at home up to the age of seven. Next he attended elementary school: he completed six grades in Śrem, and the seventh in Radom, after the family moved here. Having completed elementary school at the age of 16, he began work at a metallurgical plant as an apprentice turner. He worked there until the German invader called all those born in 1924 into compulsory service in the Baudienst. Since he couldn’t stand working for the sworn enemy, persecuted by the Germans, he left his workplace to take an even more active part in clandestine activities aimed against the occupier, which he commenced in 1942. Unfortunately, in April 1944 he was captured and imprisoned by the German thugs. After 10 weeks of torment in prison and Gestapo torture at Kościuszki Street, on 20 June he was taken to Skaryszew and shot there together with five friends.
