on mass executions and mass graves

1. Date and place of execution:

2 February 1944 r., Przedmieście Podgórze, Zawichost Commune.

2. Type of execution (by shooting, by hanging, etc.):

By shooting.

3. Personal data of the murdered victims:

Poles, Jews, foreigners: Only Poles.

Number of murdered victims: 30 people.

The victims were brought in from: From the direction of Ostrowiec.

Surname, age, occupation, address: Three names have been determined; the first one:

Gruszka, about 25 years old, from the village of Grójec, Bodzechów Commune, Opatów

District; the second one: Józef Sedrowicz, 18 years old, a farmer from the village of

Daromin, Wilczyce Commune, Sandomierz District; and the third one: Jerzy Sieradzki,

18 years old, a farmer from the Wilczyce Commune, Sandomierz District. Other names

were not determined – see overleaf.

4. Is it known what the victims were accused of, whether the execution was carried out in retaliation, etc.?

According to what people said, the people were executed for belonging to patriotic

organizations.

5. Who carried out the execution (gendarmerie, Gestapo, SS, police, Wehrmacht)?

The gendarmerie and Gestapo.

6. Are the surnames of the perpetrators known (please provide the surnames)?

Unknown.

7. Were the corpses burned or destroyed in any other way?

The corpses were buried at the cemetery in Zawichost, in a common grave.

8. Where were the corpses buried (exact location)?

Zawichost.


9. Description of the grave(s) (size, estimated number of victims buried in one grave).
10. Three meters long and two meters wide. There were 30 corpses in the grave.
11. Was there an official exhumation? Were the corpses buried officially, and if so, where?

Gradually, the families secretly collected the bodies and most of the corpses have been

taken away. Today, there are about ten corpses remaining in the grave.

12. Are there any grounds for exhumation in the future?

No.

On 22 September 1945, the contents of the above questionnaire were officially certified by Henryk Łukasiewicz, the mayor of the town of Zawichost, with the Municipal Court in Sandomierz.

Point 3. It is known that they were young men, aged from 18 to 30. Many of them came from Grójec, Ostrowiec, and nearby villages.
