Warsaw, 13 January 1970. Assistant public prosecutor Zbigniew Grędziński, delegated to the District Commission for the Investigation of Nazi War Crimes in Warsaw, heard the person named below as a witness, without an oath. The witness, after being warned about the criminal liability for giving false testimony, testified as follows:
Name and surname | Józef Karolak |
Date and place of birth | 27 October 1933, Warsaw |
Parents’ names | Czesław, Władysława |
Place of residence | Warsaw, [...] |
Occupation | locksmith |
Criminal record | none |
Relation to the parties | none |
During the occupation, I lived in Żerań, in Warsaw, [...], in the same building where I currently live. I lived with my father and mother. My father Czesław Karolak died in 1951. My mother, Helena Karolak, is currently still living and lives at [...].
Personally, I don’t remember the execution of Jews in front of our building, at the spot where a power station is currently located, because at that time I was still a child, I was only ten years old. However, I know about this execution from what my late father told me.
During the occupation, my father told me that he had seen some Nazis execute some Jews on the opposite side of the road in front of our building, at the spot where power station is currently located. My father told me that the Nazis had brought these Jews in trucks, and then shot them there, after which they were buried in some pits. My father told me that he was an eyewitness to this crime and that many Jews were shot there but he didn’t mention how many victims there were.
From my father’s account I didn’t find out what German division committed the above- mentioned crime, nor did he name the Nazi criminals involved.
In the above matter, I don’t know anything [further], although I suppose that my mother Helena Karolak (residing in Warsaw [...]) might be able to throw some light on this crime as well as my aunt (residing in Warsaw on Targowa Street, I don’t know which number).
I have read this report and sign it as being truthful.
