BRONISŁAW KUNOWSKI

A report drawn up on 10 October 1946 by the Communal Commission of the commune of Zaborów (district of Warsaw) for the Investigation of German Crimes, concerning the burning down of the settlement of Zaborówek, the execution of Józef Matuszewski and Józef Szymborowski, aged 16 and 10, respectively, and the throwing of the body of one of the victims, Matuszewski, into one of the flaming buildings.

The following man was examined in the case:

1) the leader of the community of Zaborówek, Bronisław Kunowski, who having been advised of the criminal liability for making false declarations or ones inconsistent with the truth, testified as follows:

On 24 September 1944, while partisans were conducting operations in the Kampinoska Forest, Germans accompanied by “Ukrainians” surrounded the village and dragged the residents from their houses. Some of them were taken and deported to Germany (the men). Next, having looted everything they could find, the troops burned down all of the farmsteads. Matuszewski tried to escape but was shot, and subsequently killed and thrown into the blaze. While Zaborówek was being burned down, Józef Szymborowski happened to pass by on his bicycle, and he was shot without even being stopped.

The abovementioned facts may be attested to by the following witnesses: Józef Cieślak, August Szymborowski and Agnieszka Matuszewska, and also all the other surviving residents of the settlement of Zaborówek.

I am fully prepared to repeat my testimony – accompanied by the witnesses mentioned above – under oath whenever so requested.
