CZESŁAW SOWUL

Warsaw, 23 July 1947. A member of the District Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes in Warsaw, Acting Judge Halina Wereńko, heard the person named below as an unsworn witness. Having been advised of the criminal liability for making false declarations and of the obligation to tell the truth, the witness testified as follows:

Name and surname Czesław Piotr Sowul, former prisoner no. 167 of the concentration camp in Auschwitz
Parents’ names Kazimierz and Adela, née Sienkiewicz
Date of birth 23 January 1912, in Suwałki
Religious affiliation Roman Catholic
Place of residence Warsaw, Daszyńskiego Street 18, flat 27
Education secondary
Occupation office clerk (adjutant of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland)

I stayed at the concentration camp in Auschwitz from 14 June 1940 until 28 October 1944.

I don’t remember the name Kraus. I remember the name Krauze, but he wasn’t a Sturmbahnführer. I could possibly recall the person if I saw a photograph of Kraus.

I wasn’t in Auschwitz during the evacuation of the camp.

I know Kazimierz Szelest very well as a good Pole and fellow prisoner. I didn’t hear anything about Szelest being in conflict with Kraus or about Egersdörfer helping him.

I could give detailed testimony about the activity of the following Germans:

Untersturmführer Grabner, the head of the Politische Abteilung [Political Department], Lagerführer Aumeier
and Unterscharführer Kaduc, a Rapportführer.

At this the report was concluded and read out.
